Road Tests

Medicine Hat Registries is pleased to administer road tests and asks that you please schedule and pay for your test in advance at one of our offices.

What You Should Know

  • Your eligibility to take a road test will be confirmed on the Alberta Motor Vehicles System (MOVES) when your road test permit is generated. This will include producing acceptable identification, appropriate documents based on the requirements of the desired driver’s licence class and/or medical documents.

  • A client must report to the registry agent office where the road test is scheduled.

  • The client must hold a valid Alberta learner’s or driver’s licence.

  • If ineligible on the test date, the test will not proceed.

  • Prior to the road test, you will be required to provide government generated photo identification to confirm that your identity matches the road test permit information.

Vehicle Requirements

To take a road test, you must have a safe vehicle in good working order. For your convenience, we’ve included additional information regarding vehicles used in road tests.

  • Car rental is available.

  • Please bring valid registration and insurance.

  • Brake and signal lights must be in working order.

  • Speedometer must be in working order.

  • Adequate brakes are required.

  • Functioning seatbelts are required.

  • Safety components (i.e. horn, lights) must be in working order.

  • Front doors must be operational from inside and out.

  • Vehicle must have sufficient fuel (30 - 60 minutes of driving).

  • Vehicle must be safe and have a clean interior.

General Information

  • Road test permits must be purchased at the registry office prior to booking a spot.

  • Only the person taking the road test or a parent/legal guardian (for person under the age of 18) may purchase a road test permit.

  • An Alberta operator licence is required (if suspended, please bring valid ID).

  • Bring corrective lenses if you have a condition code “A” on your licence.

  • Bring another driver in the event of an unsuccessful road test.

  • Bring medical documentation for Class 1, 2 and 4.

  • If your road test permit is lost, a new one must be purchased.

  • A driver examiner will be assigned to conduct the road test.

  • A client cannot request a particular driver examiner for their road test.

  • Only the person being examined is allowed in the vehicle with the examiner(s).

  • Road tests must be scheduled in person, with the full road test fee paid at that time. Please note, failure to provide 24 hours of notice, or failure to attend the road test at the scheduled time and location, will result in the fee being forfeited and the test will not proceed.

  • Report to our office at least 10 minutes prior to your appointment. Late clients will be subject to cancellation or may be offered a test on a “stand-by” basis if examiner schedule permits.

  • If less than 24 hour notice of cancellation is provided, the client will be required to purchase another permit.

  • If notice of cancellation is provided with sufficient time, road test may be re-scheduled. Refunds will not be given.

  • Please note driver examiners are hired on a contract basis and are not registry office employees.
